Even before his departure from Egypt in 1879, Loring had embarked on a career as a writer. He penned a number of articles on the changing situation in the land of the pharaohs, culminating in his 1884 book, A Confederate Soldier in Egypt. In addition, Old Blizzards was frequently interviewed by newspapermen on affairs relating to Egypt. Early on, Loring tended towards bombastic prognostications, especially on matters related to Khedive Ismail. However, having no doubt had to eat his words on several occasions, his later predictions are more thoughtful. During the Arabi revolt, Loring actually anticipates that the Egyptian commander will face the British at Tel-el-Kebir.
